PCI Compliance and the End of Life for Windows 7

MHA members should be aware that next January, Microsoft will be ending support of its popular Windows 7 operating system. That means Microsoft will no longer be issuing security patches, bug fixes, and software updates to help protect any system still running Windows 7.

While you may continue to use Windows 7 beyond January 2020, the operating system will no longer be updated to protect against the newest threats from hackers and malware. Retailers who process their bankcard using the Internet may find it increasingly difficult, or impossible, to maintain compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS). These standards require a system's environment to be maintained at a high level of security in order to protect it from malware and other vulnerabilities.

In short, merchants processing credit or debit cards through a system operating Windows 7 may find it difficult to remain PCI compliant. Once that happens, noncompliance fees could be charged and merchants run a greater risk and cost of payment card data being compromised.

MHA recommends you consider contacting your payment card processing provider and ask if the approaching end of life for Windows 7 will be an issue for your PCI compliance. Members may also want to consider upgrading to Windows 10.

Those members using the MHA bankcard program for their processing are encouraged to contact Mac Hardin at mach@midwesthardware.com or 612-750-2988 with any questions.
