IRS Releases New Form W-4 and Updated Withholding Calculator

The IRS has now released the new Form W-4 and updated Withholding Calculator, following the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed in December 2017, made changes to the tax law, including increasing the standard deduction, removing personal exemptions, increasing the child tax credit, limiting or discontinuing certain deductions, and changing the tax rates and brackets. Employers were instructed to begin using the 2018 withholding tables as soon as possible, but not later than February 15, 2018. The withholding tables were revised to function with the old Form W-4, therefore, the IRS is not requiring employers to obtain a new W-4 from current employees. However, the IRS encourages employees to use the Withholding Calculator to perform a quick “paycheck checkup” to help protect against an employee having too little tax withheld and facing an unexpected tax bill or penalty at tax time in 2019. The calculator can also help prevent employees from having too much tax withheld.

Click here for additional information and frequently asked questions regarding the new Form W-4 and updated Withholding Calculator found in a recent IRS News Release.
