Sweetened Beverage Tax Repeal Vote Set For October

The Cook County (IL) Finance Committee has scheduled a vote on the possible repeal of the County’s Sweetened Beverage Tax for Tuesday, October 10, at 10 a.m. At the meeting, the Finance Committee is expected to take testimony from anyone who signs up to speak about the tax.

Since its inception several months ago, the law has been a source of confusion for both customers and retailers. Lawsuits have already been filed against several retailers, claiming that the retailers either improperly assessed the Sweetened Beverage Tax or improperly charged too much sales tax on transactions affected by the Sweetened Beverage Tax.

Meanwhile, at the State Capital in Springfield, several lawmakers have begun to float bills aimed at ending the new Sweetened Beverage Tax. Whether any proposal can gain enough support to be passed by both the Illinois House and the Senate remains to be seen.

Back in Cook County, if the repeal measure is passed by the Finance Committee on October 10, it will be sent to the full County Board for consideration at their meeting scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11.

If the Sweetened Beverage Tax is an issue you feel strongly about, we urge you to share your thoughts with the Cook County Commissioners. Contact information for all of the Commissioners can be found here.
