Attn: MHA Members with employees either on, or eligible for, COBRA continuation of health benefits.
President Obama reportedly has signed the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2010. (See http://benefitslink.com/pr/detail.php?id=43789.) This Act extends the eligibility period for the COBRA premium reduction for an additional two months (from December 31, 2009, through February 28, 2010) and extends the maximum period for receiving the subsidy for an additional six months (from nine to fifteen months). Special rules apply regarding retroactive payments and additional notice requirements apply to certain individuals.
Actions Employers Should Take Now:- Review any former employees currently on COBRA (or eligible for COBRA) and determine eligibility for extended coverage.
- Provide required notice to recently laid off employees.
- Revise COBRA notice for employees being laid off between now and February 28, 2010.
New Minimum Wages Take Effect in Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Federal
ILLINOIS as of July 1, 2009 = $8.00 per hour.
MINNESOTA as of July 1, 2009 = $7.25 per hour.
WISCONSIN as of July 24, 2009 = $7.25 per hour.
Retailers are reminded, that for the most part, they are required to pay the GREATER of State or Federal wages. Particular exemptions do apply in both Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin for minor and first-time employees. Contact your local Department of Labor or Workforce Development for details.FEDERAL as of July 24, 2009 = $7.25 per hour.
